Marylebone Penthouse Flat

London, 2006

Marylebone Penthouse Flat is the interior design of an Edwardian mansion block apartment in Central London. This is a Pierre d’Avoine Architects design that KJY assisted from design to quality control in 2006. This was a carefully executed project where every details, material joints and bespoke fittings were designed to achieve coherence in all aspects of the space. We have designed a substantial spatial experience where every design was reduced to the simplest elementary appearance, intended to conceal the design and let the inhabitants to quietly enjoy the purity of space, light and the polished materials.

The thresholds of the apartments are all full height opened to allow the polished plaster ceilings to flow into different rooms. The openings from interior to the exterior of the apartment are carefully aligned so that the spatial experience is extended beyond the limits of the property. The control of alignments and flushed surfaces are so rigorous that we even designed bespoke resin-mix concrete kitchen worktop, terrazzo wash basins, terrazzo wall panels, concealed pulley mechanism for hanging the painting and lathed stainless steel sliding door locks. This is a simple space with rigorously concealed details that unveils the subtlety of sensuous spatial experience.
